The Maryland Federation was founded in 1921 and affiliated with the NFRW in 1938. MFRW is divided into six regions and has 31 clubs. The first club included a group of six activist women whose initial goals were organization, education and legislation to repeal many of the old English laws still on the books that discriminated against women. That spirit of activism continues today. The clubs vigorously support literacy and advocacy programs, leadership development, free enterprise and outreach. Members volunteer for campaigns, recruit and train candidates, raise money, and assist with voter registration. MFRW participates in Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day parades, and provides community service to women and children’s shelters. Members tutor special students and sponsor scholarships and essay contests. Today, the MFRW is the largest, strongest and best organized group of voting women in the state of Maryland.
