The First Lady of Maryland is truly an amazing woman with a life story unlike any other. She is the youngest of eight children, growing up on a chicken farm in South Korea. She came to the US after high school with high ambitions, and her life has been a roller coaster ride. She found herself as a single mother of three little girls, and to make ends meet, she taught art in the basement of her apartment and worked as a cashier. Creative and imaginative, she loved painting and studying art. She met her lifetime partner at an art exhibit in 2001, and married in 2004.
That lifetime partner would become the Governor of Maryland, and the gentle and demur Yumi would be catapulted into the public eye. Soon after the happy inauguration, her husband would be diagnosed with near fatal cancer. Yumi summoned her formidable strength to support her husband through this devastating and uncertain time. At last year’s luncheon, she talked about the terrible insomnia that she suffered and how much of the art that she produced was in black and white, stark and painful images.
Blessed with her husband’s recovery, Yumi has embraced many philanthropic efforts, especially cancer research and art therapy for children with cancer. Come meet this amazing woman at our 3rd Annual Luncheon. Ten percent of the proceeds from the luncheon are donated to Mrs. Hogan’s charity of choice.
